Former mod attracted 19,000 players in first hour on sale

Standalone DayZ racks up 88,000 downloads in 12 hours

The standalone version of the hugely popular ArmA II mod DayZ has racked up 88,000 downloads in its first 12 hours on Steam.

The game was released on the digital distribution platform yesterday under Steam Early Access, and developer Bohemia Interactive has even warned potential buyers to expect "serious issues and possible interruptions" of game functionality.

This has not stopped many consumers from purchasing the game however, with lead developer and DayZ creator Dean Hall revealing there were 19,000 unique users on the title one hour after launch. He claimed that at one point, the studio was registering more than 200 new players a second.

DayZ was first officially released in 2012, and went on to attract one million unique users within three months. The mod’s success also sparked increased sales of ArmA II.

As of the time of writing the mod has garnered more than 1.7 million players.
