Creator Chris Roberts backpedals and moves project to Kickstarter

Star Citizen makes over $1m in crowdfunding

A crowdfunding project for a new space MMO from the creator of Wing Commander has made over $1m since its unveiling last week.

Chris Roberts’s Star Citizen project has achieved over half its funding goal, and as a result of the interest, he has now launched the project on Kickstarter.

However, only last week, Roberts told Develop in an interview that Kickstarter wasn’t for him because he didn’t wish to appear like other well-known developers who have used it.

“What you’ll see is I spent a year with a small team with my own money and some angel money to put it together,” said Roberts.

“I decided that I didn’t want to be one of those people that says, ‘hey I’m famous, give me some money and I’ll make a good game’, which is pretty much all the main designers that have done well on Kickstarter.”

At the time of writing, Star Citizen has made $1,066,719 through its own website funding and looks likely to reach its bid of $2m in the near future.

Its Kickstarter page aims to reach $500,000 with 31 days to go. It has achieved $132,080 at the time if writing.

Star Citizen has received a copious amount of press coverage and is yet another name in the growing list of game projects to adopt crowdfunding this year. The response to the game has been so vast that Robert’s official website was reportedly knocked offline, which may explain why he has now chosen to launch his campaign on Kickstarter.

Star Citizen is expected to be released in 2014.
