Thirteen graduates to work on-site at UK studio

Sumo Digital placements for Sheffield students

Yorkshire studio Sumo Digital has announced a new student placement scheme in partnership with Sheffield Hallam University.

Thirteen graduates at Sheffield will be mentored by Sumo Digital staff on-site at the Yorkshire studio, giving each vital hands-on experience in game development.

In return, Sumo Digital will engage with potential rising stars in game development.

“The fact that the largest developer in the region is giving our students these opportunities is really exciting,” said the university’s senior games lecturer Dr Jacob Habgood.

Sheffield also has its own development studio, called Steel Minions, which has become a registered PlayStation Minis developer through its partnership with Sony.

Habgood said the Sumo Digital placements will come in addition to building games at Steel Minions.

"We’re really impressed with the standard of Sheffield Hallam’s students, and it’s great that we can utilise their skills and talent through these placements,” said Sumo Digital studio manager Paul Porter.

He added: "The games industry is a tough one to break into, so opportunities like this are key for students and graduates, as is being able to learn in an environment like the Steel Minions games studio."
