Tesco claims a third of Grand Theft Auto V’s total spend in UK

A third of all the money spent on Grand Theft Auto V in the UK in its first two weeks on sale in the UK was spent at Tesco.

The Grocer reports that supermarkets have as a result of the game’s release seen a significant boost to their entertainment market share. For the 12 weeks ending September 30th Tesco saw its share of the sector jump from 11.9 per cent to 17.1 per cent.

In the same period’s Asda’s jumped 2.3 per cent to 12.1 per cent while Sainsbury’s grew 2.9 per cent to 6.9 per cent.

Tesco has been the big winner,” Kantar strategic insight director Fiona Keenan stated. Asda and GAME also benefitted, both growing their shares compared to last year.

It will be interesting to see if the success of the supermarkets in the games sector continues this Christmas with the release of PS4 and Xbox One. GAME and Amazon are leading the way in pre-orders so far and we expect specialist gaming retailers to do particularly well in the run-up to launch as consumers look for help and advice.”
