'There's an opportunity for core games that are not just made with the highest budgets', says Brian Farrell

THQ: We’ve got to execute flawlessly

THQ will have to execute its planned restructure flawlessly to keep the beleaguered publisher afloat, the company’s CEO has said.

Speaking to Gamasutra, Brian Farrell said that the company did not have much room to manoeuvre due to its precarious position financially and that core games would be its focus going forward.

He however stated that this did not necessarily mean the publisher would be focusing solely on triple-A console titles, and had its sights set on various platforms.

"I think there’s a real opportunity in the changing business models we see happening in the marketplace for a smaller and more agile company like us to position ourselves quite differently," said Farrell.

"We think there’s a real opportunity – particularly in the digital space on the core gamer side, especially on emerging platforms like the PC and some of the things we see coming down the road, where there’s an opportunity for core games that are not just made with the highest budgets, but offer alternate pricing and business models There’s a place to attract the core gamer there."

Over the last year, THQ has been forced into sweeping layoffs as it turned to a core games focus after suffering from poor sales in other markets, such as its uDraw tablet.
