Square Enix chooses Finnish visiblity optimisation tools

Umbra tech used in Final Fantasy XV

Umbra has revealed that its technology is being used in upcoming blockbuster RPG Final Fantasy XV.

The game will employ the firm’s visibility optimisation tools, which ensures that only objects visible to the player are fully processed and rendered, with the aim of improving the overall quality and performance of the title’s graphics.

Final Fantasy XV is the first title to use Square Enix’s new game engine, which actually has Umbra integrated into. The game is due on Xbox One and PS4 by the end of the year.

“By using Umbra, frame-rate performance could be improved over two times than before in characteristic scenes,” a spokesperson for the development team said in a statement.

“The tool is extremely easy to use with a simple API build that allows paralleling computation to be handled with ease as well.”
