Innovative ETH reimagining of classic console on display this weekend at Ludicious game festival

Unfolding the 8-Bit Era project turns NES into eight-player, 360-degree experience

The retro NES console has been brought into the modern world thanks to an ambitious project.

Unfolding the 8-Bit Era is the brainchild of ETH Zurich, in collaboration with researchers in Disney’s technology division.

The modification uses original Nintendo hardware, adapted with Arduino multiplexer to bring the number of controller inputs up to eight, a dedicated tracking PC to create a panoramic display output and a media server to project a 360-degree version of classic NES games – all running from original cartridges.

In short, the experience allows gamers to play staple NES titles such as Super Mario Bros and Castlevania while gameplay is displayed on all four walls of a room.

Up to eight players can take part, control swapping between connected pads on the fly.

If that sounds impressive, you can get a chance to see the technology in action at this week’s Ludicious festival in Zurich, Switzerland, where Unfolding the 8-Bit Era will be on display.

It won’t be the only unique way to have some fun – a video game-themed singing session dubbed ‘Marioke’ will take place, hosted by Ste Curran, who will be discussing the topics of Love and Violence in games on Saturday at the event.
