Campaign for sequel to groundbreaking RPG will get Linux and Mac ports

Wasteland 2 Kickstarter raises $1.5m

Wasteland 2 has become the second largest video game campaign in Kickstarter history, raising $1.5 million dollars in contributions.

Following recent successes like Double Fine’s Kickstarter adventure, Code Hero, and The Banner Saga, this milestone figure adds credence to the claim that crowdfunding is has changed the way small and medium sized games are funded.

The original Wasteland was the inspiration for the Fallout series, and was voted one of the top 25 PC games of all times by PC Gamer.

The sequel is being developed by inXile studios, founded by Interplay’s Brian Fargo in 2002.

The campaign offers not only personal incentives to backers, but group incentives; promises that if the project raises a certain dollar amount, additional features and content will be added.

The $1.5 million dollar mark means the game will be ported for Mac and Linux.

Fargo drew a great deal of attention this week by suggesting that developers give five percent of their profits from Kickstarter funded games to other campaigns.

The initiative, called Kick it Forward, has a logo for developers to place on their campaigns broadcasting their support and participation, and Fargo hopes this approach will help small studios break their bonds with publishers.
