Digital games success drives numbers up at Sega

Sega has reported a 102 per cent increase in operating income to 38.53bn for the year ending March 31st.

Net sales climbed 17.6 per cent to 378bn thanks in part to the launch of titles such as top performer Total War: Rome 2 (1.13m units), Football Manager 2014 (790k), Sonic Lost World (710k) and Company of Heroes 2 (680k).

Nonetheless, software sales were down year-on-year with the numbers instead being propped up by a strong digital performance. Online RPG Phantasy Star Online 2 and smartphone titles such as Puyopuyo Quest did the business, as did smartphone versions of Sega Sammy’s pachinko titles.

As a result the company confirmed that it will increase its focus on mobile and continue to distance itself from the traditional games market.
