God of War picks up five BAFTAs

Sony Santa Monica’s God of War secured five British Academy for Film and Television Arts awards (BAFTAs) last night, including Audio Achievement, Best Game, Music, Narrative, and Performer for Jeremy Davies for his role as The Stranger.

Return of the Obra Dinn, the puzzle game developed by Lucas Pope, won Artistic Achievement and Game Design, while Nintendo Labo won Family and Game Innovation. Fortnite won Evolving Game, whilst Old School Runescape secured EE Mobile Game of the Year.

Other winners included Into the Breach (Original Property), Florence (Mobile Game), Yoku’s Island Express (Debut Game), A Way Out (Multiplayer), Forza Horizon 4 (British Game), and My Child Lebensborn (Game Beyond Entertainment).

God of War had ten nominations overall, including Artistic Achievement, Audio Achievement, Game Design, Music, Narrative and the coveted Best Game Award. Four of its performers had also been recognised in the six nominations for the Performer award, too; Christopher Judge (Kratos), Danielle Bisuitti (Freya), Jeremy Davies (The Stranger), and Sunny Suljic (Atreus).

The Awards – which are run as part of London Games Festival – took place yesterday, at Queen Elizabeth Hall in London, and were streamed live across BAFTA’s social media channels. The event was hosted by Dara O’Briain.

“I am thrilled to be returning to host the British Academy Games Awards,” he said on revealing he was returning to host the awards ceremony. “The evening is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the achievements of this wonderfully creative industry, and each year I continue to be amazed by the fantastic talent in the UK games industry. There’s also a really difficult bit of God of War I can’t get past and they seem like the people to ask…”

God of War also secured Game of the Year award at the Game Developers Choice Awards last month. Return of the Obra Dinn secured the award for Best Narrative, while Best Mobile Game went to Florence. Gris, Red Dead Redemption II, Into the Breach, and Mountains all topped their categories, too.
