Multiformat central to Bungie deal

Right at the heart of Activision’s shock announcement just moments ago that it has signed a ten-year deal with Bungie is that whatever the mystery new IP at the centre of the agreement is, it’s going to be on PS3.

The agreement grants Activision the rights to just one new, unnamed Bungie IP for the next ten years. The game will be a multiformat release, meaning possible releases on a number of devices including Wii, DS, PSP or even iPhone.

But it’s the Master Chief’s absence from Sony’s machine that Activision is silently referencing in its official reaction to its announcement.

We are very excited to announce a groundbreaking ten-year partnership between Bungie, one of the greatest developers in the world and the makers of Halo, with Activision, the number one video game publisher, that will bring new intellectual property to fans worldwide across all platforms,” Activision COO Thomas Tippl stated.

This agreement is about bringing Bungie’s new great IP to gamers worldwide to a platform of their choice and at the same time further drive Activision’s profitable growth opportunities in a way that accretive to operating income margins.”
