E3 2010: Portal 2 offers cross-platform play

If Valve gets its way, PS3 owners will be able to take Portal 2 online and play with PC and Mac owners.

VG247 quotes developer Eric Johnson as saying that cross platform compatibility is something the team is gunning for”, with Mike Dunkle adding: The plan is you will be able to play between console and PC.”

The ground-breaking feature is only possible due to Sony’s decision to allow Steamworks integration in the PS3 version.

Johnson added that Steamworks could also feature in the Xbox 360 version of Portal 2 – providing Microsoft gives the go-ahead. Xbox Live has historically been a very closed environment, suggesting that Microsoft will at the very least be reluctant to open it up so extensively to Valve.
