Now BioWare server is hacked

Developer BioWare has confirmed hackers may have obtained the personal details of 18,000 users on Wednesday.

Hackers gained illegal access to an old BioWare community server associated with the forums of RPG Neverwinter Nights. They may have taken user account names, passwords, email addresses and birth dates. BioWare said credit card data and social security numbers were not obtained.

BioWare is the latest in an increasingly long line of games companies that have been targeted over the past few weeks, including Nintendo, Bethesda, Codemasters, Epic Games and more. Two days ago hacker group LulzSec took down the game servers of EVE Online, Minecraft and League of Legends.

No-one has yet taken responsibility for the BioWare hack.

We take the security of your information very seriously and regret any inconvenience this may have caused you,” said BioWare Edmonton’s studio GM Aaryn Flynn on the BioWare Social Network.

We immediately took appropriate steps to protect our consumers’ data and launched an ongoing evaluation of the seriousness of the breach.

However hackers may have obtained information such as user account names of approximately 18,000 accounts – a very small percentage of total users.”

BioWare has recommended its users change their passwords if they are similar to those they use on other websites. It has emailed everyone who it believes may have had his or her BioWare account compromised.

The developer is known for producing popular games for EA such as the Mass Effect and Dragon Age series.
