Oculus envisions VR MMO with 1bn people

Oculus VR’s future plans include the possibility of an MMO that would simultaneously support 1bn players, CEO Brendan Iribe revealed during technology conference TechCrunch Disrupt NY 2014.

The unbelievable number is only possible, Iribe explains, thanks to the company’s recent $2bn Facebook deal – though the executive admits the technology isn’t quite there yet.

[It would require] a bigger network than exists in the world today,” Iribe said via TechCrunch’s stream of the event.

Oculus also wants to convince people they’re having "real" conversations with people — what Iribe describes as the company’s "holy grail,” – before he believes the vision for the MMO will be achievable.

"Do you want to build a platform that has a billion users on it, or only 10, 20, or 50 million?"

Oculus VR and Facebook are currently embroiled in a dispute with Zenimax over alleged stolen tech.
