Project Rap Rabbit pulls $4.95m Switch stretch goal

The new game from Keiichi Yano and Masaya Matsuura is to revise its Kickstarter strategy after criticism about one of its stretch goals.

The campaign had set up a stretch goal to bring the title to Nintendo Switch, but fans winced at the required total – $4.95m.

The campaign originally stated: The Nintendo Switch version is set to a higher tier as it requires game data to be specifically adapted for the console from the PS4 and PC versions due to the differing performance characteristics of that platform.”

However, just a day later the goal has been removed completely.

We’ve been blown away by the response since we first unveiled Project Rap Rabbit four days ago. Over the last 24 hours we’ve been taking the time to digest all your comments, wishes and feedback, and one request stands out above all others: a significantly lower Nintendo Switch goal,” an update explained.

We want to let you know that we hear you loud and clear. As a result, we are busy re-examining our Stretch Goal format to prioritise a Nintendo Switch version of Project Rap Rabbit above other features. This is a process we need to undertake carefully and methodically, so please bear with us while we piece together our new plan.”

Project Rap Rabbit is the new title from PaRappa the Rapper creator Masaya Matsuura and Gitaroo Man creator Keiichi Yano. It’s described as an explosive mix of Japanese folklore and traditional artwork, hip hop and humorous battle rap face-offs inspired by the Epic Rap Battles Of History YouTube series”.

The campaign itself is looking for a pretty substantial 855k, of which it has so far raised 89k. Backers need to fork out at least 30 to secure a copy of the title, which will be published by UK company PQube.

Our grand hip hop saga takes place in an alternate history, circa 16th Century Japan,” the blurb reads. All is not well. The world is becoming a hostile place as people object to the growing diversification of their homelands. Citizens and neighbours are becoming increasingly suspicious of, and isolated from, one another. A toxic atmosphere of protectionism is taking hold.

At the height of this culture of fear, an Earth-shattering calamity befalls the world. As the universe trembles from the aftershocks and the survivors try to rebuild what’s left of their lives, one rabbit embarks on a journey for truth, justice and liberty – and steps forward to do battle with the land’s most powerful overlords.”
