PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds passes 1.5m concurrent Steam players

It was not that long ago that people were laughing at the suggestion that PUBG could catch Dota 2 in the concurrent players race on Steam.

Bluehole’s game, of course, went on to do just that. It has since gone on to become a regular feature at the top of the Steam players charts, and recently passed Dota 2’s all-time record of 1.29m concurrent players. Now PUBG has gone one further by smashing through the 1.5m concurrent player barrier.

It achieved the feat at the weekend, as spotted by analyst Daniel Ahmad.

At the time of writing, the game has a 24-hour peak number of 1.495m, and a current concurrent player count of 888k. The numbers might have something to do with the slightly wonky servers some experienced over the weekend, although the game did not suffer any downtime.

Head developer Brendan ‘PlayerUnknown’ Greene has elsewhere revealed that three new vehicles are on the way to the game, including a VW-style camper van.

Other hints about future developments were dropped by Greene in a recent Reddit AMA. These included allusions to a possible night-time map, alterations to the blue zone mechanics and an Adriatic-Sea themed third map.

Greene also confessed that he’s love to add a single-player mode to the game, although it sounded as if this is little more than a loose aspiration for the time being.
