Video games is the star in record year for Kickstarter

2012 was a fantastic year for crowd-funding platform Kickstarter, and video games have emerged as the big winner.

A total of 18,000 projects were backed by 2.2m contributors in 2012, with video games winning the largest slice of pledges totalling $83m of the $320m total from 561,000 backers across 2,796 projects.

Games enjoyed a 30 per cent success rate, with 911 reaching their funding target.

Android console startup Ouya was the strongest performer, generating over $8.5m, smashing its $950k target.

This was followed by Obsidian’s Project Eternity ($3.987m), Reaper Miniatures Bones ($3.429m), Tim Schafer’s Double Fine Adventure ($3.336m) and inXile’s Wasteland 2 ($2.933m).

The only project to raise more than Ouya was Pebble Technology’s Pebble E-Paper Watch, which successfully attracted $10.267m.
