Has LulzSec hacked the UK Census?

Forget everything that has gone before. If rumours of LulzSec’s latest hack are proven to be true, the group may just have made a politically significant assault.

A document available online suggests that LulzSec has acquired all the highly secretive data submitted in the 2011 UK Census earlier this year.

"We have blissfully obtained records of every single citizen who gave their records to the security-illiterate UK government for the 2011 census," the text claims.

"We’re keeping them under lock and key though… so don’t worry about your privacy (…until we finish re-formatting them for release)." LulzSec’s Twitter feed hasn’t yet mentioned the move.

The Office of National Statistics told TNW that it wasn’t "aware of the issue” but is now investigating the claims.

If true the attack would dwarf those previously launched by the group on the NHS and CIA and would represent a globally significant blow to governmental data security.

On the flip side, it would no doubt prove the much needed kick in the teeth that authorities seemingly need to mount some sort of unified action against the collective.
