US: Xbox 360 shines in September

The Xbox 360 remained the star hardware performer in North America last month, making good on Microsoft’s recent claims that there’s been a mid-generation leadership change” in the console market.

It sold 483,989 units in September – a 37 per cent year-on-year increase. It was the only console to see an annual gain, with both PS3 and Wii shifting fewer machines than in September 2009.

Following changes to how it reports the numbers, NPD did not reveal the data itself, leaving it instead to Microsoft’s Aaron Greenberg.

As the Xbox 360 business heads into the homestretch of its biggest year ever, there are strong signs of continued growth and momentum,” a statement from the platform holder read.

Pre-orders of Kinect for Xbox 360 are selling out at retailers nationwide – a sign of strong consumer demand before launch on November 4th [in the US].”
