Super Mario Odyssey sells 1m physical copies in Japan

Super Mario Odyssey has sold over 1m physical copies in Japan since its October 27 launch.

This data comes from Famitsu, and is translated by Gematsu, revealing that Super Mario Odyssey has sold 1,055,806 units in Japan at time of publication. They haven’t revealed the digital number, which will inflate the count slightly.

Super Mario Odyssey became the fastest selling Mario game ever in both Europe and US, flogging 2m units within just three days of its launch. The game was well received by critics, and would definitely be hailed as one of Nintendo’s best games in years if it weren’t for the fact The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild came out just beforehand to universal acclaim.

Meanwhile, the Switch edges closer to 3m sales, with 2,988,399 units sold. 230,000 of these were sold last week. On a global scale, Switch reached 10m sales worldwide earlier in December, meaning Japan has the lion’s share of consoles by a decent margin.

The console is much more successful than its predecessor the Wii U, but as it is a hybrid console, it’s also going to have to contend with the looming shadow cast by the 3DS and its many handheld relatives. Sales figures like this are promising, but the Switch still has its work cut out in 2018.
