SNK drops the Playmore

Long-term publisher and developer SNK has officially dropped the Playmore moniker from its titles.

The company quietly began omitting the Playmore name from its logo earlier this year, but it has now been confirmed that the name change will be made official from December 1st, after which point it will be called SNK Corporation.

SNK came into being in the late 1970s and enjoyed its most successful period in the 1990s, when it released the cult Neo Geo console. However, the 2000s were less kind, leading SNK’s eventual acquisition and eventual bankruptcy.

Original founder Eikuchi Kawasaki later returned, with his new company Playmore, to acquire many of SNK’s rights, all of which eventually led to the birth of SNK Playmore.

However, last year SNK Playmore was acquired by Chinese investors who have indicated that their intention is to distance SNK from traditional gaming and instead use its rich stable of IP as a starting point for new mobile projects.
