VR pioneer takes centrestage at Unity's LA development conference

Unity announced Tony Parisi as head of AR and VR strategy

Unity has named Tony Parisi as its head of AR and VR strategy, unveiling him on stage at their game development conference in Los Angeles.

Parisi emerged on stage to promise that Unity are looking to enable Studios and developers the chance to "make and sell products", before revealing that the Facebook social VR demo that was shown at Oculus Connect 3 in September was built in Unity.

Parisi is one of the forefathers of modern VR, co-founding the Virtual Reality Modelling Language all the way back in 1994. The VRML was a tool designed to create 3d environments online. Most recently he’s been working as the VP of platform products at WEVR.

His appointment further underlines Unity’s focus on VR, which was already a firm declaration with the earlier news that EditorVR would be available and open-source in December of this year, and the news that Unity’s 5.6 update would include support for Google’s upcoming Daydream VR system.

On stage, Parisi said: "Unity has created the most accessible pro-games development tool in the world, so it is no surprise that most of the VR and AR you see these days is made with Unity."

"Here we think that immersive technologies like VR and AR represent the next computing platform. We will not just use VR and AR to create games, we will tell stories and build worlds, we are also going to share moments and hang out together online."
