US dev’s Reflections sees players’ narrative choices transforming the world around them

Broken Window Studios triumphs in Global VR Challenge

The organisers of the Global VR Challenge have announced this year’s winners.

The top prize was taken by Broken Window Studios, a US developer, for its game Reflections. This first-person ‘narrative exploration’ game tasks players with exploring relationships with a multitude of characters and making key choices throughout.

Depending on the choices they make, the world around them changes, starting off as black and white and eventually becoming more colourful. The judges deemed that both this mechanic and the game’s art style worked particularly well in VR.

Broken Window Studios was one of hundreds of developers competing, with entrants whittled down to a shortlist of just ten. Finalists were then taken to leading Asian games show ChinaJoy to compete in one final round alongside six Chinese studios, with the top five nabbing a share of a $35,000 cash prize pool.

The rest of the top five included: Youku’s Heroes of the Seven Seas, GameD9’s Bombu, Tom Graczyk’s Space Box: The Journey Out Of The Box, and Toxic Games’ Qube 2.

The Global VR Challenge was arranged by Pocket Gamer publisher Steel Media with the help of Chinese VR firm DeePoon.
