System Shock remake launches on Kickstarter

Nightdive Studios is trying to bring cult title System Shock back to life.

The studio just launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund a remake of the iconic FPS title.

The team’s goal is to raise $900,000, $360,000 of which has already been funded. The campaign will end on July 28th.

A pre-alpha demo is already available on various online platforms, including Steam.

The Kickstarter page says System Shock will initially be available for Windows and Xbox One only, while OSX and Linux versions will be unlocked if the first stretch goal is reached. There’s no mention of a PS4 version but the studio says it‘s open to other platforms in the future.”

CEO of Nightdive Studios Stephen Kick commented: This is a full-fledged reboot of a classic game into something new. As well as including members of the original team, such as famed concept artist Robb Waters, we have been expanding to include a number of industry veterans with years of triple-A development experience having worked on games such as Fallout, Tomb Raider, Skyrim and Wasteland."

Robb Waters, concept artist for both the original and contemporary versions of the game added:"When I was first approached by Nightdive, I was excited at the opportunity to revisit my original work. However, it has turned into much more than that. I have been able to completely re-envision the unfortunate occupants of Citadel Station in a way that technology would not permit in 1994."

A remake of the original System Shock was announced last year. Nightdive was also responsible for the Enhanced Edition of System Shock that launched in 2015, as well as 2013’s remaster of System Shock 2.

A new entry in the System Shock series is also in the works, with original creator Warren Spector leading development.
