Capcom names HD remasters as key business area going forwards

Japanese publisher Capcom has said that remastered versions of its back catalogue of hit titles will be one of its focuses.

In a Q&A, the company said that it has started ‘aggressive digital download sales activities’. It says that this is the result of it being harder to sell lower-priced and remastered titles because of a decline in the number of physical stores and limitations in shelf space.

Capcom cites the release of Resident Evil HD earlier this year, which has so far been a high seller for the company.

The publisher announced that it had been the fasted selling digital title in PSN’s history, and it went on to top the PSN charts for January. It went on to surpass one million unit sales in April since its launch on January 20th.

This follows the firm posting its lowest annual revenue total in over ten years.

HD remasters of our catalogue hit titles will be one of our key business activities,” the company said. Overseas, it is becoming difficult to sell these lower-priced and re-mastered titles at stores because of the declining number of stores and sales area limitations.

Therefore, we started aggressive digital download sales activities. These activities created new demand for these titles. For example, overseas download sales of Resident Evil (HD Remastered) in the past fiscal year were far higher than we expected. It is not a risk but rather the growth of the download sales channel gives users more options. We regard this as growth in opportunities to have allow access for more people to enjoy our games.”
