NBA 2K14 wipes players’ single player career modes

Yet another stark warning about the risks posed about the increasingly online-dependent console gaming world has arrived courtesy of NBA 2K14.

Polygon reports that publisher 2K Games recently shut down the online servers for the title. That in itself was enough to infuriate many players, occurring just 16 months after the game was released.

However, it transpires that online gameplay wasn’t the only thing affected – players have also lost access to their progress in Career mode, despite that fact that it takes place entirely offline and despite previous assurances that this wouldn’t be the case.

Saving Career mode progress requires that the game checks in with 2K’s online servers. 2K has altered the game so new Career games will no longer do this, but this hasn’t stopped players being locked out of their existing saves, therefore losing almost a year and half’s worth of progress.

If you had created a MyCareer or a MyGM online save file that was once connected to our servers it too sadly has retired and is no longer available for use and it would be necessary to re-create these files as offline saves," 2K Support has been saying to users.

Sadly this may come as an inconvenience to some of you and if so we truly do understand and can feel for how upsetting this may seem as there always is a special bond that occurs between a player and their MyCareer save but all good things must come to an end and rest assured your MyCareer or MyGM went out while on top.

"We hope you enjoyed your amazing experience with NBA 2K14’s online services and you can look forward to the continue experience [sic] they provide in NBA 2K15."
