Yakuza 0 coming to PS4 and PS3

A prequel to the Yakuza series has been announced for PS4 and PS3.

Gematsu reports that Yakuza O is set in December 1988 and depicts events that are directly related to the original game.

Development is said to be 65 per cent complete, with a release date yet to be announced.

What we do know is that the main characters are 20-year-old Kazuma Kiryu, who is a bill collector under the Tojo Clan’s Dojima Family, and 24-year-old Majima Goro, who is a cabaret club manager.

The Yakuza series debuted on PS2 in 2005. It spawned a sequel for PS2 a year later – which was subsequently released for PS3 and Wii U – and made its first full PS3 debut with Yakuza 3 in 2009.

Yakuza 4 hit PS3 in 2010. There have been a number of spin-off titles, too.

Note that the series has a tradition of leaving big gaps between its Japanese and European releases – typically between one and two years.
