iPhone 6 will be announced on September 9th, it seems

Apple has scheduled a media event for September 9th at which it looks likely to reveal the iPhone 6, numerous reports have claimed.

A release for the device – or devices, as seems to be the case – will then likely follow in mid-September, possibly on September 19th.

It is more or less accepted at this stage amongst the technology press that Apple will release two versions of its next iPhone. One will offer an already enlarged 4.7-inch display and the other a super-sized 5.5-inch screen.

This is being interpreted as a response to the increasing commercial success for big-screen Android smartphones such as the Samsung Galaxy and HTC One series, as well as the growing market for ‘phablets’.

Both will house Apple’s new A8 processors. Note that there has also been speculation that the larger iPhone 6 will launch later in the year due to supply issues with some key components.
