Tech would likely cost thousands of dollars for consumers, says Penello

Illumiroom too expensive for Xbox One release

Microsoft’s impressive illumiroom tech will not be available to consumers as it’s too expensive, says the firm’s senior director of product management.

The tech, revealed last year, projects the peripheral vision in a game beyond the confines of the TV and into the rest of the living room, with the aim to create a more immersive experience.

But speaking to Ausgamers, Penellio said he doesn’t expect consumers to see Illumiroom available on the market, as it would cost thousands of dollars to set up.

"I wouldn’t expect you’ll see that,” Penello said.

“It’s very, very cool tech but it’s, like, for a consumer, it requires projectors and things. It’s really super-neat if you’re in the lab and you’ve got Microsoft money and you could totally set up this awesome lab, but… we looked at it, but for an average customer it’s, like, thousands of dollars [for the set up]."
