Rockstar says it will "see what happens in the future" regarding next-gen Grand Theft Auto V

Grand Theft Auto Online is being pitched as on on-going and long-term service – does that mean it will inevitably arrive on PS4 and Xbox One?

There’s very few games like GTA Online – so we’ll play it by ear and see what the consumers want,” Rockstar North president Leslie Benzie told CVG. We’ll get the current gen version out first and see what happens in the future.”

That doesn’t automatically point to a next-gen console release, of course. The games industry of the future is an increasingly diverse one.

Everything’s going to the Cloud, isn’t it?” Benzie added. It’s the future, and the boxes become less relevant. It’s more about the content. It’s more about the data than the hardware. And, yeah, whether you’re on your iPad, your iPhone, your Android or your console, to me it doesn’t matter what it is. It’s a game.”

Back in the here and now, Benzie also confirmed that while the gameplay demos so far have been running on PS3 there is no discernable difference between the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of Grand Theft Auto V.

This is probably the first game we’ve done where both platforms have been running in parallel,” he added. There’s very, very little difference in the development state of them both. They’re both very similar. It would be hard to tell them apart.”
