Nintendo continues push to greatly expand its digital business with Web Framework

Wii U HTML5 tech sparks interest from over a thousand devs

Over a thousand developers have been in contact with Nintendo expressing interest in using its Web Framework for the Wii U, company president Satoru Iwata has said.

In a E3 briefing, Iwata said the company had received “great feedback” over its development platform, which allows developers to use web technologies such as HTML5, JavaScript and CSS when creating games.

Detailed at GDC 2013, and then further again in a financial briefing Q&A, Nintendo said that the number of developers who used these web technologies was 100 times larger than the range of devs for dedicated consoles.

Iwata said that it hopes the framework will increase opportunities for small, independent developers and help grow its digital business.

The Wii U is also supported by the Unity development platform, which is used by more than one million game developers.

“Even though software for dedicated gaming devices has become advanced and complex, we have been working on those new approaches to expand the range of developers for the platform,” said Iwata.

“As digital business expands, there will be even more opportunities for us to do business with small, independent software developers.”
