Obsidian Kickstarter closes just shy of $4m

Obsidian’s Project Eternity Kickstarter campaign has finished at just under $4million, setting a new benchmark for video games on the crowdfunding platform.

The previous record holder, the Double Fine Adventure, gave up its title just a day eariler as Project Eternity passed $3.3million to become the most funded video game project in Kickstarter history.

The project owes its success to the deep relationship Obsidian has with its fans, who widely believe the studio has been held back by medling publishers, and the engenious use of stretch goals promising additional content at higher levels of funding.

Obsidian earned this level of dedication years ago, when its founders worked at Black Isle studio.

The team created some of the most memorable RPGs in history, from the Fallout series to licensed Wizards of the Coast titles like Icewind Dale, Baldur’s Gate, and Planescape: Torment.

The promise of another title combining the isometric turn-based delights of old and the unique storytelling talents of Obsidians talented craftsmen has earned Project Eternity a place in crowdfunding history.
