Notch wants to make Elite-style space game inspired by Firefly

Having conquered the world with hit indie PC hit Minecraft, famed developer Markus ‘Notch’ Persson has revealed a bold idea for a future title.

PC Gamer reports that the Swedish developer wants to make a sandbox space trading game like Elite – except done right”.

Where it would differ from David Braben’s cult hit, however, is in the fact that users would take control of an individual within a ship rather than a ship itself.

I want the space game that’s more like Firefly,” he stated. I want to run around on my ship and have to put out a fire. Like, oh crap, the cooling system failed, I have to put out the fire here.”

The goal is to do it the same way I did Minecraft – just basically have me work on it for a while, and then we’ll add people as needed, and try to charge as soon as possible, because it’s probably going to be open ended sandbox game as well, so it doesn’t need to be completed before people can play it.”

However, the statement is far from a confirmation that any such title is on the cards. In fact, Notch added that if someone steals the idea before me, that’s totally fine. I just want to play that game”.

Persson’s current project is roguelike title MiniTale.
