Developer-publisher to use Umbra 3.1 rendering performance optimisation middleware

GDC: Square Enix opts for Umbra

Square Enix has secured a deal that will see it Umbra’s rendering performance middleware in its forthcoming video games developments.

Conceived to reduce CPU and GPU processing time, Umbra 3.1 optimises the likes of rendering, content streaming, AI and game logic by using techniques such as automatic portal generation during pre-process, which takes away the need for artists to manually position portals within a game world.

“We are honored that Square Enix chose Umbra middleware for use in its future projects and it’s been a pleasure to work with Square Enix’s engineers”, said Umbra Software’s CTO Otso Mäkinen.

Square Enix is best known for the Final Fantasy, Deus Ex and Hitman series.

Released in December 2011, Umbra 3.1 is presently available for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PC, handheld and iOS.
