PC edition of the game requires Steam authentication, Gearbox reveals

Steamworks chosen for Borderlands 2

2K Games has announced that all editions of Borderlands 2 on PC will rely on Valve’s Steamworks suite.

Developer Gearbox will be using Steamworks’ capabilities for multiplayer matchmaking, Steam Cloud storage, achievements, auto-patching, releasing DLC, and more.

Valve’s service also works effectively as a simple DRM system for the game. Those purchasing a retail version of the PC edition will be required to register the game with a Steam account, and launch it through the digital platform.

Borderlands 2 is currently targeted for a September 18th launch on PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
