Apple App Store serves up its 50 billionth download

The 50 billionth app has been downloaded from the Apple App Store.

The lucky punter who initiated the magic download – Ohio’s Brandon Ashmore – has been handed a $10,000 App Store gift voucher. He downloaded word game Say The Same Thing.

It took just under five years for Apple to hit this milestone.

The App Store currently delivers in the region of 800 app downloads per second. The catalogue now offers 850,000 iPhone apps and 350,000 iPad apps and is available in 155 countires.

"Apple would like to thank our incredible customers and developers for topping 50 billion apps downloaded," Apple’s Eddy Cue stated.

"The App Store completely transformed how people use their mobile devices and created a thriving app ecosystem that has paid out over nine billion dollars to developers. We’re absolutely floored to cross this milestone in less than five years."
