Guillermo del Toro laments entertainment’s ‘b*stards with money’

Film director Guillermo del Toro has once again lashed out at business practices that he believes lesser the creative endeavours of the games industry.

I think it’s a pity,” Del Toro said at last night’s DICE panel, as reported by VentureBeat. It is a marriage that happens in every big industry. The storytellers look ahead to see what they can discover, and the money people look back to see what is a safe route.

There is a tension there. Like in the cinema, you have beautiful indie games that are subtle, or poetic. It’s limitless. It’s only limited by the bastards with money.”

Del Toro is not shy of criticising the games industry.

In August last year he vowed to never again get involved in video games” after the failure of projects with the now closed THQ and Hideo Kojima’s also cancelled Silent Hills title.

Of the latter decision del Toro went on to criticise Konami directly for its removal of popular Silent Hills teaser demo PT, likening the move to a scorched earth approach”. In October he said that it makes no f*cking sense” that Konami cancelled the project.

However, the director has now also said that he might consider a fresh games project – providing he was working with Kojima.
