$1m Splatoon eSports tournament announced for Japan

Nintendo’s latest IP is preparing to burst onto the eSports scene in a big way.

The Daily Dot reports that media giant and Famitsu owner Kadokawa as well as Nicovideo owner Dwango will kick off a series of tournaments in Japan next month, all of which lead to the concluding event on January 30th.

A $1m prize pool has been confirmed, which is the same as Street Fighter’s high-profile Capcom Cup and four times the amount up for grabs at the Hearthstone World Championships.

A similar tournament for mobile puzzle hit Puzzle & Dragons has also been announced.

Nintendo said in June that it had sold over 1m copies of Splatoon worldwide.
