3DS hits 5m Japanese sales in record time

Forget any preconceptions you have about 3DS not selling as expected – Nintendo’s machine has just smashed an all-important sales record in Japan.

Andriasang reports that the handheld has now passed the 5m unit sales barrier in Japan. Furthermore, it has done so faster than any other games hardware ever released.

The previous record holder, Nintendo’s very own DS, took 56 weeks to hit the 5m mark in Japan. And that beat the previous record set down by the Game Boy Advance – 58 weeks.
