40,000 UK sales for PS3 Slim

The PS3 Slim sold 40,000 units in its first week of release in the UK, MCV can reveal.

It was reported earlier this week that sales of PS3 climbed 999 per cent week-on-week following the launch of the new model. However, no sales figures were released at the time.

The number was arrived at by looking at week one sales for the PS2 Slim, which the BBC reported to be 50,000 in the UK. Sony said last week that week one sales of the PS3 Slim were 20 per cent behind that number – hence, 40,000 is the figure for week one sales of the PS3 Slim.

Sony declined to comment on the news, though UK sales director Mark Howsen did tell MCV on Monday that SCE is extremely pleased” with the console’s start in the UK.

The achievement means that the UK just outpaced the French debut of the machine, though lagged some way behind the barnstorming Japanese launch.
