AMD spins-off graphics division, will focus on GPUs and VR

AMD’s graphics card offering is now a business all of its own.

The PC tech firm, which produces both CPUs and GPUs, has created the dedicated Radeon Technologies Group, named after its successful line of graphics cards, in order to double-down in its graphical endeavours.

Calling the move a ‘strategic alignment’ in its announcement, AMD said that the new division would also work to boost the company’s efforts in the virtual reality and augmented reality sectors.

Former head of visual and accelerated computing projects for the firm, Raja Koduri will lead the newly-created group as senior VP and chief architect, overseeing ‘all aspects of graphics technologies used in AMD’s APU, discrete GPU, semi-custom and GPU compute products’.

Koduri was also responsible for heading up AMD’s LiquidVR technology, which focused on improving the compatibility of the firm’s cards with headsets such as the Oculus Rift.
