Angry Birds rules the roost on the Apple App Store

At this time every year, Apple releases ‘Rewind’, its annual year-end lists for music, movies, TV shows, podcasts and apps.

Last year, Rovio’s phenomenon of a game was best paid app – and it’s repeated the trick in 2011. It didn’t figure in the iPad stakes as it wasn’t out for the tablet at the time, but now it’s dominating that space too.

The only app to break the avian clean sweep was Facebook, which was top free download.

Those were the best by quantity, but Apple also chose its favourites – selecting Instagram as its overall best app for iPhone, and photo app Snapseed for the iPad. R

Game of the year went to Tiny Tower (iPhone) and Dead Space for iPad.
