App Store downloads hit 10bn

Just two and a half years after its debut in July 2008, over the weekend the Apple App Store saw its ten billionth app downloaded.

Free game Paper Glider was actually the app in question, and was downloaded by Kent resident Gail Davis who won a $10,000 iTunes gift card for her efforts.

Apple now says that there are over 160m iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad users worldwide. The App Store itself now has over 350k apps available to download.

With more than 10bn apps downloaded in just two and a half years—a staggering seven billion apps in the last year alone—the App Store has surpassed our wildest dreams,” Apple’s senior vice president of worldwide product marketing Philip Schiller stated.

The App Store has revolutionised how software is created, distributed, discovered and sold. While others try to copy the App Store, it continues to offer developers and customers the most innovative experience on the planet.”
