Call of Duty introduces micro-transactions

Activision appears to be adopting the games-as-a-service philosophy as it introduces micro-transactions for Call of Duty: Black Ops 2.

In a blog post announcing that the Nuketown 2025 map was being made available free for all players, Activision community manager Dan Amrich revealed that micro-transactions ranging from $1 to $5 were to be introduced into the Xbox 360 version of Black Ops 2.

Micro-items, as Activision is calling them, are completely optional, Amrich said, adding, None of them affect gameplay, but they are small, specific ways to enhance your online experience”.

Amongst the micro-items are personalisation packs based on specific themes, one of which seems to be bacon. So if you’d like, you could have your assault rifle wrapped in bacon. Each pack includes a unique weapon camo, three targeting reticles, and a custom player Calling Card” for 160 MS Points.

Other micro-items include extra loadout slots and national flags as Calling Cards.

Activision hasn’t announced if or when micro-items will be available on other platforms.
