It may have hypnotised critics, but much like its spiritual predecessor Rez, recent release Child of Eden wasn’t such a hit at retail – a fact clearly not missed on publisher Ubisoft.
When the game arrives on PS3 on September 23rd consumers’ will notice more differences than simply PlayStation Move support. The title is set to retail for just 19.99. That’s half the price of the 39.99 release it got on Xbox 360.
In fact, several key online retailers have already slashed that price to just 14.99, which frankly is an absolute steal for such an accomplished title.
Child of Eden could manage only 25th place when it debuted in the UK charts in June. It dropped the 35th in its second week and vanished from the Top 40 in its third week.
And month one sales in the US failed to reach 35,000.
A budget price is clearly aimed at propelling the title to greater success at retail and could well prove to be a smart move for Ubisoft.
UPDATE: Ubisoft has told MCV that it does not comment on pricing strategy.
