3DS lifetime sales surpass Wii in Japan

Lifetime sales for Nintendo’s 3DS handheld have overtaken the company’s Wii console in Japan.

Games Industry reports on the latest Media Create charts, which show 3DS sales totaling over 12.75m – compared to the Wii’s 12.7m units sold.

The weekly charts also show that the 3DS is dominating the software category, with titles on the device taking up 12 of the 20 spots on the list.

Monster Hunter 4 is the major source of the latest spike in sales for the 3DS, with the system selling over 159k of the 188k units sold across all platforms in hardware.

To give you an idea of the actual dominince being shown here: Sony’s PS3 finished as the runner-up in the category, with just over 10.7k units sold during the period.
