Report: Nintendo to end production of Wii U this week

Platform holder Nintendo will reportedly cease production of its Wii U console by the end of this week.

That’s according to Eurogamer, who cites multiple sources saying that Japanese production of the hardware will end this Friday (November 4th) after the final deadline for orders has passed.

To date, the Wii U has sold 13.36m units since its November 2012 release.

Earlier this year, Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima said that Wii U production would come to an end in March 2018 – one year after the launch of its brand new Nintendo Switch machine, which was revealed last month.

Nintendo has forecasted that it would sell 800,000 Wii U consoles for the financial year ending March 31st, 2017. For the year to date, Nintendo has sold 560,000 Wii Us, as September 31st, 2016.
