Wii Remote sales to soar with Play sequel

Nintendo has predicted sales of Wii Remote Plus will jump when mini-game collection Wii Play: Motion is released this Friday (June 24th).

It’s the sequel to one of the best-selling games of all time – Wii Play – a 2006 Wii launch title. This went on to sell tens of millions of copies worldwide, with 2m units sold in the UK alone.

While the original came with a standard Wii Remote, the sequel will come bundled with a red Wii Remote Plus. Nintendo says this will encourage buyers to grab more Wii Remotes as up to four players can take part.

Wii Play: Motion is the next title in the Wii series and it has the Wii ‘magic formula’ as it is a first-party title that offers instant fun for four players,” Nintendo’s marketing assistant Vanisha Kavia told MCV.

For these very reasons, we expect that it will be just as successful as the original Wii Play over a long period of time.

As the game can have up to three other players, we hope to see an increase in sales of the Wii Remote Plus controller as undoubtedly friends and family will want to join in on the fun that comes with Wii Play: Motion.”

The game will be promoted by a TV campaign targeting families and kids that is set to air for four weeks.

In-store retail POS materials will also support the game’s release.

Wii Play: Motion will retail for around 39.99 to 44.99.
