Who makes the best games in the world?

We answer that question today with the publication of the 2011 edition of the Develop 100, a ranking of the worlds best studios.

Put together in association with Metacritic, we’ve compiled a ranking based on all the games released in calendar year 2010 – that’s over 1,500 games made for consoles (retail or digital), handhelds (retail or digital) PC (retail or digital) and smartphone (iOS platforms, digitally distributed).

The results are eye opening – rather than just using UK commercial market data, this wider more global remit means that

– The list features a huge, huge number of independent studios
– Over half are iOS developers
– Over 30 have produced major retail hits
– More countries are represented than ever before

So while Nintendo EAD Tokyo scores the top spot thanks to its critically acclaimed Super Mario Galaxy 2, second and third places are scored by iPhone developers 2D Boy and Zepto Lab, followed by SCE Santa Monica (God of War III) and Blizzard Entertainment (StarCraft II).

This is a truly diverse list – but one that accurately reflects the world of games development today.

The Develop 100 is sponsored by gamecity:Hamburg, and is published today with Develop’s June issue and selected copies of MCV. It’s also published online as a digital edition.
