DSi enjoys rampant demand in debut weekend

Nintendo’s DSi became the fourth fastest-selling console in UK history over its opening weekend, according to GfK-ChartTrack data.

The handheld’s performance even eclipsed the debut sales numbers of the original DS – only being outdone by the opening weekends of PSP, PS3 and Wii.

In unit terms, it outsold all other consoles combined over the weekend – including PS3, PSP, Wii and Xbox 360.

It’s a very impressive opening couple of days considering the lack of launch software,” said GfK-ChartTrack’s Chris Poole.

It’s the fourth fastest-selling console in UK history in terms of opening weekend – one ahead of the original DS in fifth and way ahead of DS Lite.

"It’s difficult to tell if the momentum will continue into the week, as much of the sales would have been pre-ordered. There was also a slight spike in DS software."

The console was launched at midnight last Friday on the UK High Street.
